Pirates in 1st

Baseball is my passion, and as I write this the Pittsburgh Pirates are in first place.? After 19 straight losing seasons, they look like legitimate contenders for a playoff spot.? Of course, there’s a long way to go.? And if you’re a baseball fan, you may remember they were in a similar position last year and then had a disastrous August and September, so we Pirates fan are holding our collective breaths.??Being a Pirates fan hasn’t?been all bad.? The Buccos have given me three World Championships in my lifetime — in 1960 against the Yankees, in 1971 against the Orioles, and again in 1979 against the O’s.? That’s two more than Braves fans have experienced.?

I know this has nothing to do with fitness, but it’s my blog and I can write what I want to.? Anyway,? I’ll keep you posted on the progress of the Bucs as we head into the stretch run.

A Week at the Beach

I went on vacation last week with the family. We rented a house in Surfside and had a fun week. It was relaxing, but active. I ate a lot of food including a double dip waffle cone of ice cream every night, but when I got home I weighed the same as when I left.
The reason for that is simple. I was active all week. I ran 30 minutes on the beach 5 of the 7 days we were there, and I got in a good weight lifting workout 3 other days. Plus I played some golf — walking the course. And my kids and I rode the banana boat which is like white water rafting and we played in the surf a good bit. We also rode the Slingshot and took a helicopter ride over the beach.
The point is: You don’t have to gain weight on a vacation. Stay active and you’ll come home in as good a shape as you left, even with a little indulgence like ice cream every night.
